(Although I may be mistaken).

That said, I suppose 20% time was not really used for feature requests by communities outside of wmf core tech goals. It was really mostly used as code review time, and not much else.Bawolffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02917810358934543942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7338246785946121007.post-10679630474714340322013-02-22T04:42:30.776-08:002013-02-22T04:42:30.776-08:00To be honest I had not noticed the no wmf tech res...To be honest I had not noticed the no wmf tech resources rule until after I had wrote most of this post. With that rule in mind that part of the wikisorce prpposal makes much more senseBawolffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02917810358934543942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7338246785946121007.post-83046004366871497732013-02-22T02:24:04.570-08:002013-02-22T02:24:04.570-08:00Hi Bawolff, thanks for the post. I'm one of the proposer of the Wikisource grant, and I want to make clear that the first draft of the proposal was to develope/discuss/collaborate with WMF tech staff for Wikisource needs. But we were explicitly told that any grant proposal which asked for that was to be rejected: the WMF "narrowed its focus", as you know, and dropped the Fellowship program for that. So we changed our plans: we are studying and will try to design a roadmap. We'll maybe able to prepare for a second grant proposal at the end of this, explicitly focused on tech. Anyway, one of the key volunteer Wikisource developer (I'd say one of the 2-3), Tpt, is actively partecipating to the grant. You're welcome, anyway :-)Andreahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02541374609145467386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7338246785946121007.post-82803848179139551092013-02-21T22:43:39.828-08:002013-02-21T22:43:39.828-08:00Thank you. Indeed the IEG process is still extremely confusing and it's not clear what may come out of it, but at least the proposals allowed us to read this lovely blog post of yours. ;-)
As for Wikisource, I think they adjusted it to rely on/hope/beg WMF tech resources less following feedback to early versions; as noted in the discussions about the "not engineering-focused" rule, the WMF does not seem to want technical innovation to come from the community/volunteers via this program.
"Employees do have 20% time" is also no longer true, see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/LevelUpFedericohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01590082705421602977noreply@blogger.com
